In the midst of Vendimia madness, one of Mendoza’s downtown plazas sets out upon a celebration all its own: Festa en Piazza. The Plaza Italia Fiesta blankets Italy Square, one of the city’s 5 downtown plazas, and fills it with celebration for a handful of nights in early March. Organized by the Italian Federation and staffed by local Argentine-Italian families, the food, the music and the mayhem are all to celebrate Argentina’s Italian roots.

One of the biggest names in wine, Steven Spurrier, was recently in Mendoza to judge the Argentina Wine Awards. A world renowned wine writer and former merchant, Spurrier is most known for organizing the now infamous Paris wine tasting of 1976 where he invited wine experts to blind taste and judge great Bordeaux wines alongside Californian reds.

This year’s Argentina Wine Awards saw some great wines come to the fore, and 58 gold awards, 256 silver awards and 276 bronze awards for the 650 wines tasted. After a week of judging with a panel of international wine experts, the winners were announced at a gala evening on February 21 at Bodega Escorihuela Gascon.
